Artificial intelligence has “overwhelming potential” for climate and inclusion

The disruption brought about by advances in technology, the growth of computing power and artificial intelligence (AI) tools – especially generative intelligence – is here to stay, says Catarina Soares. The person responsible for digital strategy at NTT Data attended yet another sustainability conference organised by Jornal de Negócios, this Wednesday dedicated to the topic of Governance. "Technology obviously has a transformative role and AI will, in fact, enhance and leverage the possibilities of organisations and managers", she believes.
A recent study carried out by the consultancy in 34 countries confirms that "companies are adopting AI strategies to fill some of their gaps and to innovate". More than 60% of organizations believe that generative AI will quickly transform the way they operate, a figure that fell to 54% when we consider only national companies. "Even so, companies and CEOs recognize that there is huge potential", reinforces the expert.
In addition to enabling greater efficiency and finding new business opportunities, these tools have "overwhelming potential" in areas such as energy transition or inclusion.
One of the examples given by Catarina Soares is a project implemented by NTT Data in three national dams to monitor biodiversity. "Until now, this monitoring of fish populations and their movements was done by human eyes. This involves many hours of analysis, is a time-consuming task and subject to human error", she explains. With the introduction of AI, it was possible to speed up this task and reduce the margin of error by 80% to 90%.
"Another example we recently applied was with a national public entity, which we supported in assisting immigrants who do not speak our language", he adds. To eliminate "language barriers" between employees and immigrants, an application was used that allows communication in a simpler and more fluid way. "AI is going to change a lot, I think this is just the beginning of what is to come", he concludes.
